When we were contacted by Arctic Electric/Arctic Digital in Bloemfontein to install a complete AV system at one of their long-time customers, we immediately checked our schedules and arranged a site visit.

The venue serves a dual function as a conference and training area, with seating for approximately 55 people. Adjacent to the indoor venue is an outdoor entertainment area, measuring roughly 30 meters across and 30 meters deep. The briefing was simple.

This area will be used for training and conferences, where video and static PowerPoint-style presentations will be displayed on a projector and motorized screen. Additionally, it serves as the main entertainment area for events such as year-end functions and company social events. Considering the lively and enthusiastic staff, we decided to go with the PowerWorks brand of active speakers – the Apollo.

Both venues required clear vocal reproduction at low levels, as well as high SPL (Sound Pressure Level) music reproduction. Furthermore, we needed the ability to play one source inside and another outside, or both simultaneously with the same source. For instance, we can play DSTV or a PC AUX cable inside the venue and have a Bluetooth link outside, each with individual volume control. This is a common requirement for dual-venue setups, and we frequently encounter such scenarios. Our solution to this problem is simple, elegant, and very intuitive.

The Equipment:

Currently, the PowerWorks Apollo series of speakers are highly affordable and exceed expectations in terms of performance. Arctic supplied 4 x Apollo 10A BT speakers and one Apollo 18" processed subwoofer. This setup delivered ample volume when needed and was subtle enough to accommodate quieter sessions with finesse.
