At Production Wise, we are never ones to shy away from an interesting sound challenge. This was certainly the case when the National Museum in the Bloemfontein CBD approached us to create an interactive sound system that would activate when a visitor entered an exhibition hall.
In 2022, we designed and installed four individual systems, each triggered in different ways and at varying proximities. We created bespoke soundtracks for each installation, which are played through strategically positioned speakers within the exhibitions. The result provides visitors with an audio representation of what the exhibit would have sounded like in real life, adding another level of engagement and bringing the exhibitions to life.
The systems automatically switch off once movement within a pre-specified area stops, and are activated again as soon as new visitors enter the designated area.
A year or so later, we expanded this concept to the First Chambers and Wagon Museum, also in Bloemfontein. Here, we installed a two-channel system, with each channel handling different sound effects and tracks for separate exhibitions. This approach allowed us to provide an effective and immersive audio experience while keeping the overall installation costs to an absolute minimum.
Earlier this year, we completed our most ambitious system to date at the Anglo-Boer War Museum (Vrouemonument) in Bloemfontein. We installed three new interactive sound systems. Two incorporate two tracks each, covering four individual spaces, while the larger system features six separate effects tracks covering the Battle of Magersfontein exhibition.
The Magersfontein installation uses two channels to tell the story of the battle, with four strategically positioned speakers recreating gunshots, cannon fire and battlefield commands in the various languages that would have been heard on the field that day.
Each system is triggered in a variety of ways and plays its tracks for a predetermined period before automatically shutting down and waiting for the next trigger event or visitor.
